Out of Luck….

We were going to hike the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, which once carried traffic over the Mississippi River as part of legendary Route 66.  Legends live to die.  The bridge remains open to foot and bike traffic, but the parking lot is closed except for special events.

We then made our way to the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area and ventured toward the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.  Alas, the road was closed due to high water.

An excellent example of a bored walk.  I'm guessing the turtles weren't bored.

So we then went to the Visitors Center, but the greeter, who must have been on his way out, said it was also closed.

To make matters worse he flopped down on the wall and said…

"Guess you're out of luck."  After which, he just smirked.

The legendary, fantastic, known spectacular photo op Chain of Rocks Bridge parking lot is closed except for special events. There's no place close to park. We asked at a Subway, and the guy said there were "issues" when tourists did leave their cars. Wow….glad we didn't try to park.
The road really was closed due to high water. We had parked and were on foot, but didn't get too far. We saw all sorts of Great Blue Herons and large white water birds, but they were too far away to capture with my lens.
I did get some awesome landscape shots. Maybe I can post those (they're not cute, just pretty).
The Visitor Center really was closed up tight, and I'm not kidding, the greeter really smirked after he said we were out of luck.
    Hehehehehehehehehe….thanks so very much!!!

Thanks soooooo much!!! He was such a cutie with his lovely aqua collar and bell.
We were there on Saturday, but did you notice the big article about Route 66 in the Sunday Post Dispatch? How ironic. The article said that the Chain of Rocks Bridge was opened to the public but failed to mention that you couldn't park anywhere nearby if you weren't attending a special event. I was looking forward to getting some photos from the bridge.

  5. What a cute♥orange kitty ^^ i love the collar too! Good he looked straight at ur camera. -we used to have a n orange cat but it was lost in the neighborhood and we have not found it anymore ;( It was named Orange~*..

I remember reading about Route 66– I found it sad that it no longer exists in its whole, original state. I really do prefer taking the old highways– while slower and more time-consuming, they're also more scenic, have less traffic, and I get better fuel economy at that pace.It is cool, however, that at least one segment still accepts foot and bike traffic.

Oh my goodness! That is a great Cheshire cat grin in the last photo!

  8. pyrl says:

LOL at smirky greeter cat! What a really great bridge! Never knew about it before. Hope you get to go back sometime.

  9. jaypo says:

What a shame! But you had a big marmie cat to console you with his indifference.

Aren't forest rangers supposed to wear hats? 🙂

  11. What Fun!He looks to me like he's saying, "Can you please help me get this ridiculous looking thing off my neck?"

  12. Kimmers says:

Looks beautiful. Too bad you couldn't go any further. Love the greeter. "SO sorry, you JUST missed closing time."

  13. Lurkertype says:

Orange cats smirk even better than other kitties. I don't know how, but they do.

  14. TreeSweater says:

    Gandalf kitteh!You. Shall. Not. Pass!

  15. LBeeeze says:

He was such a cutie with his spiffy color and beautiful orange fur. I'm so sorry you lost your orange kitty. : – (

  16. LBeeeze says:

Too bad we couldn't actually hike the bridge because there wasn't any place close (and safe) to leave the car. It makes me wonder if it's safe for people to hike when there is no organized event.

  17. LBeeeze says:

Heehee…..that's EXACTLY what I thought….Cheshire cat grin all the way there.

  18. LBeeeze says:

Thank you soooooo much!!! Hehehehehehe….smirky greeter cat is smirky!!!

  19. LBeeeze says:

Hehehehehehehehehe…that's exactly what he did….console me with his indifference. I love it.

  20. LBeeeze says:

Unless the wear pretty aqua blue collars with matching bells.

  21. LBeeeze says:

I was wondering what his thoughts were about the pretty blue aqua blue collar. I wonder if it's part of the official uniform.

  22. LBeeeze says:

Thank you very, very much!!! It was pretty. I wish we could have gotten closer to the Herons and the white water birds…..the greeter was too, too much. I'm glad I ran into him.

  23. LBeeeze says:

I so totally agree with you. I wonder if it's because their smirky mouths show up better. They are so very good at it.

  24. LBeeeze says:

Hehehehehehehehehehe…..you got that right. We did not pass!!!

  25. Raymond says:

You should have looked for Kookie, he's the guy who takes care of the cars. Can't miss him really, always combing his hair, wears a leather jacket, and like all the cool cats, has his collar turned up…

  26. LBeeeze says:

Thank you so very much for your kind words!!!

  27. LBeeeze says:

Is that who that was??!! That Kookie had some attitude…..but in a very cool way.
